Water Rails

                                             Water rails in Gloucestershire

A few quick images of a water rail, from earlier this month.I was actually looking for Cranes around Somerset, which where released a few years ago as part of the Great crane project and now breeding successfully in the area.
Numbers are still in the tens rather than the hundreds,so tracking them down can be a bit challenging, and a good amount of patience is required, so lucky for me while waiting for them to turn up this water rail came to the edge of a near by reed bed,and started prodding around for food ,and was surprisingly bold. These small birds are more often heard, and spend most of there time skulking deep in amongst the reeds
